In a statement released on social media, the Ministry stated that “all security protocols have been activated” and “the Armed Forces, the National Police, and intelligence agencies are working together to neutralize any threat.” Authorities are not only referring to possible attacks against the president —who traveled to the United States last Thursday for “personal matters”— but also to “terrorist attacks and street tensions through violent demonstrations”, following the presidential runoff.
During the week just concluded, a purported intelligence report circulated on social media mentioning “the transfer of hitmen from Mexico and other countries to Ecuador to carry out terrorist attacks against the President of the Republic and his team.”
The Executive Branch blamed these possible actions on “political sectors defeated at the polls,” without directly mentioning the Citizen Revolution (RC) movement, whose candidate denounced the existence of a “grotesque electoral fraud” and asserted that she would challenge the results.
According to the National Electoral Council (CNE), in the runoff election on Sunday, April 13, Noboa defeated González by 11 points. González, who that same day said he would not recognize the results and announced that he would request a recount.
Ecuador and other parts of the world point out that the elections were held without basic democratic conditions or guarantees.
Based on a report from observers from the Organization of American States (OAS), González confirmed this Friday on his X account there were “irregularities throughout the electoral process, and we will present evidence of the manipulation of the electoral records.”
Regarding the accusation of an attempted assassination of the head of the executive branch and other actions, former president and founder of the RC, Rafael Correa (2007-2017), stated on his social media that this is intended to divert attention.
He mentioned the “China box” strategy of “trying to make one scandal—last Sunday’s fraud— be forgotten by creating another scandal.”
