PT-Brazil calls amnesty bill for coup plotters an “aberration”

Brasilia, Apr 15 (Prensa Latina) Brazil's ruling Workers' Party (PT) has called the protocol for urgently requesting an amnesty bill for former president Jair Bolsonaro and his coup entourage a true constitutional aberration.

The initiative presented by right-wing and center-right parties to the Chamber of Deputies proposes pardoning those who participated in demonstrations anywhere in the country from October 30, 2022, until the date the law comes into force. This would benefit those implicated in the attempted coup of January 8th, 2023, when radical Bolsonaro supporters invaded and looted the capital’s National Congress, the Supreme Court, and the Presidential Palace, calling for a military intervention to hinder the democratically elected government from coming to power.

The leader of the PT party in the lower house, Lindbergh Farias, recalled tha2,245 bills are beingng processed under urgent measures in the assembly, and the amnesty bill, celebrated by the Liberal Party (Bolsonaro’s party), is just one more. “This bill is a true constitutional aberration and a threat to democracy. It is an instrument forged to free Bolsonaro and his criminal group from prison, with alarming scop denouncednd, and considered inconceivable any intention to free from punishment, for example, those who planned the assassination of Lula da Silva, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes as part of the so-called Operation Green and Yellow Dagger.

“The bill provides for the extinction of civil, criminal, and political effects for those benefiting from the law, thus reversing the decisions of the Superior Electoral Court on ineligibility, leaving Bolsonaro eligible to run in the 2026 elections,” added Farias, who reaffirmed that it ly unconstitutional, as it violates fundamental clauses of the federal Constitution, such as the very existence of the Democratic Rule of Law.

Farias stressed that the trial of the coup plotters in the Supreme Court is a unique, historic opportunity for Brazilian society to put an end to the conspirators and supporters of dictatorships. “It is time to consolidate democracy and punish right-wing extremists who still believe they can act with impunity against the rule of law,” he emphasized.

Speaker of the lower house, Hugo Motta, will make the final decision procedures who appears unwilling to rush the debate, which, in his opinion, “is not in the interest of the majority of Brazilians.”
