During the 24th Extraordinary Session of the AU Executive Committee, Algiers obtained 34 votes in the third round of elections, defeating Libya, which received 15 votes.

The other candidate was Morocco, but it withdrew before the election.

Joining the new Council member for the 2025-2028 term are Cameroon (center), Ethiopia (east), Eswatini (south), and Nigeria (west).

According to the Algerian Embassy in Ethiopia, this victory is a recognition of its role and position under the leadership of President Abdelmadjid Tebboune in promoting peace and establishing security on the African continent.

The agenda for the extraordinary session also includes the appointment of a member of the AU International Law Commission and the African Space Council, the continental organization stated.

Argelia completó Consejo de Paz y Seguridad de la Unión Africana

Addis Abeba, 15 abr (Prensa Latina) Argelia ganó hoy las elecciones como representante del norte del continente para completar el Consejo de Paz y Seguridad de la Unión Africana (UA) para un periodo de tres años.

Durante la 24 Sesión Extraordinaria del Comité Ejecutivo de la UA, Argel obtuvo 34 votos a favor en la tercera vuelta de los comicios y se impuso ante Libia que recibió 15 votos. El otro candidato era Marruecos, pero se retiró antes de ese proceso. Junto al nuevo miembro del Consejo para el mandato 2025-2028 se encuentran Camerún (centro), Etiopía (este), Eswatini (sur) y Nigeria (oeste).

Según la embajada argelina en Etiopía, esta victoria es un reconocimiento de su papel y posición bajo el liderazgo del presidente Abdelmadjid Tebboune en la promoción de la paz y el establecimiento de la seguridad en el continente africano.

Por otra parte, la agenda de la sesión extraordinaria incluye la designación de un miembro de la Comisión de Derecho Internacional de la UA y para el Consejo Africano del Espacio, precisó la organización continental. mem/nmr
