At the meeting of Heads of State and Government of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) held in Honduras, the representative of President Dina Boluarte stated that such unity is necessary to consolidate the region as a valid international interlocutor.
He added that, for such unity, “the work of CELAC must be energized and strengthened, with a sense of pragmatism and solidarity” and said that the regional consensus must reflect a common vision on pressing issues of regional importance.
Denegri highlighted CELAC as a space for dialogue and, above all, a mechanism for consultation to arrive at concrete solutions to pressing problems facing member countries.
“The absence of consensus is not an option; current challenges, a product of a changing world, require us to reach agreements to have a clear and powerful voice, as an articulated region, to respond to the complex common challenges we face,” he said.
Among these challenges, he mentioned the fight against transnational organized crime, irregular migration, the energy transition, food security, and the fight against drug trafficking, due to their direct impact on the daily lives of Latin American and Caribbean populations.
The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs highlighted Peru’s support for the proposal that a Latin American be the next Secretary-General of the United Nations, because the region is characterized by its commitment to international peace, security, and democracy, he said.
“It is time to demonstrate that unity and determination can be translated into concrete measures to guarantee the peace, security, and well-being of our peoples,” he asserted.
