China tariffs on US products go into effect

Beijing, Apr 10 (Prensa Latina) As previously announced, China will be applying 84 percent tariffs on all products imported from the United States.

Chinese Customs announced the tariffs’ entry into force and specified flexibility in their application for so-called “goods in transit” until May 13.

Beijing responded this way to US President Donald Trump’s escalation of tariffs on Chinese goods, which now total 125 percent.

Amid Trump’s tariff war, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce added 12 US companies to the export control list and banned trade in dual-use items from those companies. In addition, China sued the United States under the WTO’s dispute settlement mechanism over the latest tariff measures.

Donald Trump announced another tariff shift on Wednesday when he paused his “reciprocal” tariffs for 90 days, except for those on China, which were raised to 125 percent. He wrote in Truth Social that China has shown disrespect for global markets, and therefore decided to increase “the tariff levied on China by the United States of America to 125 percent, effective immediately.”

Beijing did not give in to Trump’s threats and responded to the “reciprocal” tariffs with several measures, beyond the taxes on US products.

On Wednesday, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce stated that the trade deficit with the United States is structural and with comparative advantages between the two countries. It emphasized that this phenomenon is not due to deliberate practices on the part of Beijing, one of the excuses the White House uses to impose tariffs of up to 125 percent on Chinese products.
