In a post on her X account, Keller-Sutter, who is also the nation’s finance minister, expressed her support for “finding solutions that are in the interest of both parties.”
She added that during the conversation she explained to the US president Switzerland’s position on bilateral trade, as well as possible responses to the expectations his government may have.
Today, the tariffs imposed on Swiss goods, totaling 31 percent, compared to the 20 percent imposed on members of the European Union, came into full effect.
Switzerland decided not to respond to Trump’s trade measure by raising its own tariffs, thus leaving the path open for negotiation, according to official statements.
The Swiss equipment and machinery sector is one of the hardest hit by the new tariff, as is the watch industry, which previously exported 20 percent of its production to the US market.
