Speaking at the bloc’s Ninth Summit of Heads of State and Government, Gonzalves recalled that since its founding, CELAC has aimed to establish a mechanism for true integration, unity, and solidarity.
The Caribbean leader upheld the principle of working together and preventing external forces from “humiliating, dividing, and intimidating us,” and recalled the complexities experienced during the COVID-19 pandemic and access to vaccines.
Gonzalves urged creative work and, on this point, supported Mexican President Claudia Sheimbaun’s proposal to hold a summit on the well-being of Latin America and the Caribbean based on current global circumstances.
The Prime Minister also urged working toward the region’s economic and social sustainability and, above all, addressing the situation of the most vulnerable nations.
