Algeria pleads for Morocco-Polisario Front talks resumption

Algiers, Apr 7 (Prensa Latina) The Algerian government has called for the resumption of direct negotiations between Morocco and the Polisario Front before the United Nations envoy, local media highlight today.

In a meeting held in this capital, the Algerian authorities told the United Nations (UN) special envoy for Western Sahara, Staffan de Mistura, that this process should occur without preconditions and in good faith.

According to official information, the Algerian Foreign Minister, Ahmed Ataf, conveyed to De Mistura his conviction that the only way to complete the decolonization process in Western Sahara is to restart direct negotiations between the parties in conflict.

In this regard, Algiers called for a political solution that guarantees that the Sahrawi people exercise their inalienable right to self-determination.

De Mistura is on a region tour that includes Morocco, Mauritania, and the Sahrawi refugee camps in Algerian territory.

Western Sahara, a former Spanish colony, was invaded and occupied by Morocco in 1975, following Madrid’s withdrawal, leading to war with the Polisario.

The Polisario Front has repeatedly expressed its support to restart the UN-sponsored peace process for Western Sahara.

This process is at a standstill due to the obstructionism and intransigence of Morocco, the occupying state, and its continuous violation of the ceasefire since November 13, 2020.
