Official sources indicated that Fernández also traveled to that province, in the east of the country and approximately 145 kilometers from Santo Domingo, the capital, to meet with the commanders of the troops deployed in the area.
The Minister was accompanied by senior officials from the Ministry of Defense General Staff, including the Director of Intelligence of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Aguilera Trujillo; the Director of Operations of the Armed Forces, General Cáceres; and the Director of the Specialized Corps in Tourist Security (Ciutran), General Almonte Cid.
During the visit, the authorities discussed security-related issues in the area, as well as the coordination of support operations for the General Directorate of Immigration, in order to ensure compliance with current laws.
The Government reported that this Sunday it intensified immigration control operations in the towns of Friusa and Mata Mosquito.
With the participation of military units, immigration authorities are conducting inspections at key points in these areas, with the aim of regulating the presence of foreign citizens, primarily Haitians, in the country.
Between Friday and Saturday, more than 500 people in an illegal situation were detained and transferred for verification and repatriation, the Government indicated.
