FAO celebrates anniversary of water resources data system

Rome, Apr 5 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) celebrated the 30th anniversary of AQUASTAT, the leading source of global water and agriculture data, a release states on Saturday.

A report published by this international organization’s press office states that, during a commemorative event at FAO headquarters in this capital, the strategy for water and sanitation, recently approved by the United Nations System Chief Executives Board for Coordination (CEB), was also assessed.

In his opening remarks, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu underscored the critical link between water and agrifood systems.

“There can be no food security without water security,” Qu said, referring to the fact that water is essential to fulfill the objectives of FAO’s Strategic Framework 2022-31, which focuses on making agrifood systems more efficient, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable.

AQUASTAT was developed in 1995 by FAO’s Land and Water Division in response to a growing demand for comparable, up-to-date, and policy-relevant information on water use in agriculture, the world’s largest water-consuming sector.
