Nicaraguan deputy highlights progress in guaranteeing drinking water

Managua, Apr 3 (Prensa Latina) Nicaraguan National Assembly Representative Wálmaro Gutiérrez highlighted the country's progress and the government's efforts since 2007 to guarantee sanitation and drinking water for the population.

The president of the Parliament’s Economy and Budget Committee pointed out that in 18 years, the policies implemented by the Sandinista administration have doubled the sanitary sewer service. He also noted that before 2007, Nicaragua only had 30 percent coverage in this area, and by the end of 2024, the country had reached more than 60 percent.

During that period, the number of families served by sanitary sewers increased from 150,000 to 410,000. “In terms of drinking water, we received Nicaragua with 65 percent coverage, and by the end of 2024, we have had 97 percent coverage. In 2007, 384,000 families were served, and now we are serving 838,000,” he emphasized.

According to Gutiérrez, between 1990 and 2006 (the height of the neoliberal governments), an average of $26 million was invested annually in water and sanitation, and during that entire period, these administrations did not reach $430 million. However, between 2007 and 2023, the Sandinista government invested $26 million to $67 million annually in the sector, for a cumulative investment of $1.13 billion.

The Nicaraguan Parliament approved this Wednesday the decree on a loan signed between Nicaragua and the Central American Bank for Economic Integration for $130 million. The funds will be used to finance the improvement and expansion program for four drinking water systems in five densely populated cities across the country.

The project includes the construction of 23 wells and three new water collection works, along with the rehabilitation of two existing ones. There are also plans for the creation of 26 new pumping stations and the construction of 11 new storage tanks with a total capacity of 18,093 cubic meters, as well as the rehabilitation of four existing tanks with a capacity of 3,201 cubic meters of water.
