Brazil’s Supreme Court rejects request to arrest Bolsonaro

Brasilia, Apr 3 (Prensa Latina) Minister Alexandre de Moraes, of Brazil's Supreme Federal Court (STF), rejected the request for preventive imprisonment against former president Jair Bolsonaro, accused of attempted coup after the 2022 elections.

The magistrate attended to the request of the Attorney General’s Office (Prosecutor’s Office), which expressed its opposition to the provisional imprisonment and requested the filing of the news-crime.

According to the Attorney General Paulo Gonet, the councilwoman Liana Cristina da Costa, who demanded the preventive imprisonment, is not in legitimacy to make this request to the STF and there are no minimum elements of evidence to justify the arrest of the former governor.

“Undeniable, moreover, the flagrant active illegitimacy of the plaintiffs to request precautionary measures. On the other hand, the news reports do not contain minimum informative elements, which sufficiently indicate the reality of the criminal offense”, Gonet alleged.

In his statement, he specified that this type of action should be filed with the police or the Public Prosecutor’s Office, the bodies responsible for representing this measure.

The prosecutor also recalled that all appropriate actions involving Bolsonaro were already requested by the Federal Public Ministry within the framework of the investigation that led to the complaint against him for attempted coup d’état.
