Resident families in Purok Manokan, Barangay Ilihan, located in the volcano’s permanent danger zone, were moved from the Regional Evacuation Center to the Payag sang Kapag-on Village in Barangay Napoles.
The local government built this temporary settlement on a seven-hectare plot of land.
Instead of modular tents, it opted for 50 modern nipa huts for sustainability, according to the city’s official gazette.
The four million peso (US$69,000) investment included a community kitchen, bathrooms, spaces for children, areas for management teams, doctors and security.
These residents are part of the 2,612 families distributed in 22 evacuation centers in Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, who were prohibited from returning to their homes within the volcano’s danger zone.
