“It is our duty and our right to defend this peace, this sovereignty, this self-determination, and this security,” Castro said Tuesday in a plenary session in which the law declaring “April, the People that Defends Peace” was approved.
In his speech, Castro referred to the failed coup attempt in April 2018 and recalled that seven years ago, they attempted to destroy security and halt the progress of the Sandinista Popular Revolution. “They tried to halt the fight against poverty and the increase in the well-being of families and communities in Blessed and Forever Free Nicaragua. They tried, financed by the empire and sponsored by the traitorous and sellout oligarchy, to eliminate the people’s Revolution. But how naive they were! They couldn’t and never will be able to,” he asserted.
The legislator recalled the difficult days of the coup attempt, which resulted in the murder of 200 people, 196 of whom were men and four women, including 22 police officers.
Representative Wilfredo Navarro, emphasized the importance of continuing to defend peace, while stating that the coup plotters sought to take Nicaragua off the path of progress and development they were building. “They were evil men who sought, through terror, blackmail, murder, and death, to uproot the fundamental principles of this path we are making and building for the people of Nicaragua,” he emphasized.
A statement from the Parliament noted that the legislation recognizes the historic struggle and courage of Nicaraguans, who “have known how to confront the aggressors and traitors of the homeland,” and recognizes the leadership of the people, who managed to consolidate peace as an invaluable asset and the fundamental pillar upon which “the future of the children of this free, dignified, and sovereign nation” is built.
