President Díaz-Canel Reaffirms Cuba’s Commitment to Nuclear Disarmament

Havana, Apr 2 (Prensa Latina) — Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel reaffirmed his country’s steadfast position in favor of nuclear disarmament and the complete and effective prohibition of nuclear tests, according to Granma newspaper.

This statement was made during a meeting with Robert Floyd, the executive director of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization, held the day before.

During their conversation, President Díaz-Canel expressed his gratitude for the support received and emphasized the longstanding relationship between the organization and Cuba. He praised Floyd for his personal contributions to the development of “a robust, well-equipped, effective, and efficient verification system concerning nuclear weapons,” highlighting the positive impact of his work agenda on the island.

The president noted the evident strengthening of relations between the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization and various Cuban institutions, including agencies from the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Environment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the University of Havana, and Civil Defense. “These are all ample reasons for you to feel welcomed in Cuba, along with the rest of your delegation; with this visit, our relations become closer,” he stated.

Floyd conveyed that it was a great honor to meet “the leader of a country that has been deeply committed to the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons and total disarmament.”

As part of his official visit to Cuba, Floyd shared experiences with experts from the Center for Radiation Protection and Hygiene, as well as the Institute of Meteorology and Nuclear Safety, regarding the early warning systems currently in operation in the country, including radiological, seismological, and tsunami alerts, among other facilities.
