According to the spokesman, the People’s Liberation Army focused on verification and identification, warning, and expulsion of enemy forces, as well as interception and detention operations.
The drills are focused on the Chinese military’s ability to control the region, establish joint blockades, and conduct precise strikes against key targets.
Beijing emphasized Tuesday that these exercises constitute a response to separatist provocations by the Taiwanese authorities led by Lai Ching-te, and also underscore mainland China’s determination to maintain stability in the Strait by strengthening its military capabilities.
Professor Meng Xiangqing of the National Defense University emphasized that the change in the names of the maneuvers, from “Joint Sword” to “Strait Thunder,” reflects the wide variety of military options available to counter Taiwan’s independence movements. It also demonstrates the diversity of tools and means at the disposal of the Chinese armed forces.
Beijing has repeatedly emphasized that it will not allow any separatist attempts or external interference in Taiwan.
