Cuban Embassy in Mexico screens documentary on Palestine

Mexico City, Apr 1 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Embassy in Mexico screened "La Raiz del Olivo" (Where Olive Trees Weep, 2024), a moving documentary on the struggle and resistance of the people of Palestine under the Israeli occupation.

Its director, Cuban-Bolivian Sergio Eguino, noted that the film tells the story of five Palestinians in Cuba, four of them young doctors trained on the island and a 36-year-old man who is living in the Caribbean nation.

The film also narrates how genocide and occupation have crossed their lives and the worsening of this feeling in them after October 2023, the filmmaker said, alluding to the beginning of Israel’s offensive against Gaza, which so far has left more than 50,000 dead, most of them women and children.

Cuba’s Ambassador to Mexico, Marcos Rodriguez, stated that the documentary “is a modest contribution of young Cuban artists to the necessary and permanent condemnation of the massacre and destruction being currently committed in the Gaza Strip.”

He considered that the genocide perpetrated by Tel Aviv in Palestine, with the absolute complicity of the government of the United States, is the continuity of more than seven decades of illegal occupation and abuses.

“The Cubans, who have resisted the impact of 66 years of unjust US economic, commercial, and financial blockade, know that the concept of hope is closely linked to that of resistance, and Palestine have resisted,” he said.

He reiterated his strongest condemnation of Israel’s genocidal actions and assured that a permanent and immediate ceasefire in the illegally occupied Palestinian territories is urgently needed.

Representatives of embassies from countries such as Bolivia, Venezuela, Nicaragua, and Brazil, along with other guests, attended the activity.
