In a telephone conversation with General Min Aung Hlaing, chairman of the State Administration Council and prime minister of Myanmar, Sharif expressed his heartfelt condolences for the loss of lives and damage to infrastructure and property caused by the March 28 quake.
“We assure you that Pakistan’s people and government are ready to help Myanmar at this difficult time,” the head of government himself reiterated in a post on the X platform.
On the eve, Sharif directed the National Disaster Management Authority to adopt the most efficient, speedy and economical option to provide humanitarian aid to the people of Myanmar as soon as possible.
Myanmar’s ruling military junta declared a week of national mourning due to the expected heavy casualties caused by the quake.
Rescuers and health personnel from India, among other countries, are cooperating in rescue efforts in the worst damaged areas of the neighboring nation. Seventy-five missing workers are believed to be still trapped in the rubble, and rescuers continue to search for survivors.
