In an article by Minister Jitendra Singh, in charge of Science and Technology, he states that nuclear energy currently contributes approximately 3 percent of India’s electricity generation, and that there are projections of potential growth in nuclear generation through 21 reactors in various stages of implementation, which will total 15,300 megawatts.
According to Singh, India’s current nuclear landscape has been transformed. From just 4,780 megawatts in 2013-2014, nuclear capacity has increased more than 70 percent to reach 8,180 MW, distributed across 24 operational reactors.
The official stated that annual electricity generation increased from 34.228 billion units in 2013-2014 to 47.971 billion units in 2023-2024, adding that India’s nuclear mission aims to harness India’s abundant thorium reserves, which Singh said are the largest in the world, to achieve complete energy self-sufficiency.
The Minister highlighted the goal of 100 Gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2047, for which the nuclear energy mission focused on strengthening national capabilities was launched.
