According to statements, the rallies will be held in coordination with the Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (Unitary Workers’ Union) to draw attention to the needs of improving the social and educational conditions of teachers.
“Colombia is at a point where, although senators receive guaranteed salaries, they are hindering positive reforms for the people without even discussing them; the district administration is threatening to cut the pay of teachers who actively advocate for their rights by taking to the streets,” reads one of the messages released.
During this event, the union is also expected to submit a list of demands to the government, outlining its proposals for better working conditions for the country’s teachers.
The organization declared in one of its statements that Colombia is “the country where the people fight, while the senators of the Seventh Committee are the ones who decide,” referencing the committee where eight legislators defeated the government’s labor reform on March 18.
Union spokesman Hugo Cárdenas emphasized that, in addition to supporting the list of demands, the teachers will also endorse “the social reforms proposed by the Government of Change.”
The marches of the Federation, which comprises nearly 270,000 members, aim to raise awareness about the significance of the debate in Congress regarding bills beneficial to the working class and the implementation of measures that support the education system.
