According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi’s agenda will extend until April 2, and the main objective will be to promote the implementation of the consensus reached by the two heads of state.
In addition, spokesperson Guo Jiakun said that the two foreign ministers will hold in-depth discussions on the development of China-Russia relations, as well as on international and regional issues of common interest.
The Russian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Lavrov, will meet with Wang Yi in Moscow on April 1 to discuss the situation in Ukraine.
The two ministers last met on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers’ meeting in South Africa last February, when the Chinese president held talks with Russian Security Council Secretary Sergei Shoigu.
Xi recently emphasized that Moscow and Beijing are “true friends forged in the fire” and called for close communication at all levels.
Wang Yi, noted that the frequent talks between Xi and Russian President Vladimir Putin reflect the high level and uniqueness of bilateral relations.
Wang Yi’s visit to Russia comes amid an international context marked by the recent round of talks between Russia and the United States. Furthermore, China and Russia are preparing for the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the victory over Japan and the end of World War II.
