Vandalism and sabotage damage electric service in Haiti

Port-au-Prince, Mar 28 (Prensa Latina) The Federation of Electricity Workers Unions of Haiti today called for intervention in areas where gang members perpetrate sabotage and vandalism against the infrastructure affecting the service to the population.

A prolonged blackout has been threatening the citizens of the metropolitan area for almost two months, the substation that supplies Carrefour-Feuilles, Martissant and several other neighborhoods.

It is impossible to carry out repairs due to daily shootings.

The trade association estimates that of the 10 substations that supply the metropolitan area, only four seem to be still functioning.

State intervention is vital to address these growing difficulties and avoid the total collapse of the power grid, whose supply is already limited to a few hours a day for the more fortunate, commented Haiti Libre digital newspaper.

The same newspaper reported last year that citizens in Haiti have been living without electricity for two years and the town of Jeremie has been without power since 2021, a fact that shows that the nation is currently experiencing a chronic blackout.
