Thai government denies bribes in vote of censure motion

Bangkok, Mar 28 (Prensa Latina) The Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand, Prasert Jantararuangtong, today described as absurd the accusation about an offer of 295 000 dollars to vote in favor of the Prime Minister, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, in the no-confidence motion. Jantararuangtong, also Minister of Economy and Digital Society, said that no party in the ruling coalition, which has more than 300 deputies, needed to buy votes, as it had a large majority to win.

The deputy prime minister thus responded to a Facebook post by opposition MP Krit Silapachai, who included a screenshot of an alleged conversation where he was offered such a sum in exchange for his vote.

The no-confidence motion, which took place over two days ago, concluded with 319 votes in favor of the Prime Minister, 162 against and seven abstentions, out of a total of 488 parliamentarians.

In addition to ruling coalition MPs, seven opposition members voted in favor of Shinawatra, including representatives of the Palang Pracharath Party and the Thai Progressive Party Jantararuangtong suggested that some opposition MPs may have been persuaded by the prime minister’s defense of the accusations, and dismissed speculation of seeking a coalition approach to join her.
