Behind France and at a similar level to Italy, Spain is one of the three great world powers of wine and its wineries are now feeling the pressure due to the threats launched by US President Donald Trump.
According to specialists, the sector has already suffered the effects of restrictive tariff policies in the past, and the current situation could be even more critical for many wineries.
Abencys, a firm of lawyers and economists specializing in restructuring and insolvency, pointed out that many companies in the sector could be beginning to evaluate strategies to anticipate the possible economic consequences.
The national wine sector feels that this measure would seriously affect competitiveness of Spanish exports, and put at risk the financial stability of many wineries with a strong dependence on the US market.
The law firm recalled that during Donald Trump’s first term in office, the threat of new tariffs led many wineries to seek alternative market diversification and financial strategies to mitigate the impact.
