In this regard, the Haitian Ministry of Economy and Finance instructed the Customs Offices located on the border between this country and the Dominican Republic, that as of April 7, no goods from abroad will be received through the neighboring nation until further notice.
“All such goods must arrive in Haiti by sea to be dealt with by the competent Customs,” the circular stresses.
Customs officials are to confiscate all goods crossing the border in violation of this prohibition.
The circular is issued at a time when there is a boom in gangs, armed with weapons and ammunition sent to the country through the Dominican Republic.
The Gazette Haiti News digital newspaper recalls that in March, Dominican authorities seized an arsenal that was to be sent to Haiti.
On that occasion, 36,000 cartridges of different calibers, 18 rifle magazines, 13 nine millimeter magazines, a magazine for a 50 caliber rifle, a silencer and a box of pistols were detected.
In addition, 23 other firearms were discovered coming from the United States, destined to be sent to Haiti, and then 37 other weapons.
