Humanitarian Legal Aid will hold a conference addressing alleged human rights violations under the government-proposed measure, approved by the Legislative Assembly. They will also release a report on the deaths of nearly 400 Salvadorans in prison, many of whom were never identified as gang members. Speakers will highlight deaths, disappearances, and arbitrary detentions, accusations the government denies.
On Wednesday, several organizations, including the Human Rights Institute of the José Simeón Cañas Central American University and the Passionist Social Service, presented a report on human rights violations during the three years of the state of emergency. They reported receiving 6,889 complaints of innocent people being detained between March 27, 2022, and February 28, 2025.
The report highlights the cruel treatment of detainees upon arrival at prisons, including beatings, mistreatment, cruelty, and sexual abuse.
A representative of the Passionist Social Service explained that released prisoners live in fear of rearrest or the detention of family members.
