Foreign Ministry spokesman Guo Jiakun highlighted the role and prospects of the Biological Weapons Convention, in the framework of the 50th anniversary of its entry into force.
He recalled that this document establishes key international obligations to eliminate threats, reduce biosafety risks and promote the peaceful use of biotechnology.
“It has played a key role in the common cause of all humankind to maintain peace, security and promote development and prosperity,” he said.
The spokesman noted that Chinese President Xi Jinping proposed the Global Security Initiative, which calls for international cooperation to address issues such as biosafety.
He also endorsed the full participation of developing countries in global governance on this issue.
“China calls on all States Parties to take concrete measures, earnestly fulfill their obligations and uphold the authority of the Convention,” he said.
