ALBA-TCP condemns US decision to impose tariffs on Venezuela

Caracas, Mar 26 (Prensa Latina) The ALBA-TCP member states categorically rejected the US government's announcement to impose 25 percent tariffs on countries that trade hydrocarbons with Venezuela.

The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America-People’s Trade Agreement stated that the measure violates the most basic norms of international trade, generating openly discriminatory treatment toward the Bolivarian Republic. It also stated that this has the well-known objective of affecting Venezuela’s national income and the health of its economy, generating suffering among the population.

The bloc denounced “the absurd motivation for this measure of economic aggression,” which seeks to justify the criminalization and stigmatization of the Venezuelan migrant population by promoting systematic violations of their human rights outside the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter, international law, and international pacts respecting the migrant population.

ALBA-TCP stated that following the format of unfounded and ideologized aggressions, the United States government “is engaging in a new attack against Venezuela” by announcing the imposition of extortionate trade measures aimed at affecting the healthy functioning of the Venezuelan economy “with the clear objective of destabilizing institutions and peace in [Venezuela].”

The Bolivarian Alliance considered this context unacceptable and urged the international community to unequivocally condemn this illegal, criminal, and hostile action by the U.S. government, which threatens the development and well-being of the Venezuelan people, and constitutes a real threat to the peoples of all Latin America and the Caribbean.”
