South Sudanese opposition rejects presence of Ugandan troops

Juba, Mar 25 (Prensa Latina) South Sudanese opposition leader Riek Marchar told international bodies today that the presence of Ugandan troops in this country endangers the 2018 peace agreement.

Marchar, who is also South Sudan’s first vice president, called for an intervention by the United Nations, the Organization of African Unity, and the regional IGAD bloc through a letter where he accuses Uganda of violating international agreements by deploying its troops in South Sudan.

The opposition leader also said that the current developments could affect the transition to democracy in South Sudan and urged an end to the tensions and violence unleashed in recent weeks between the government, other political forces and ethnic groups in the country.

Recent changes of opposition figures in the Upper Nile governance, stipulated in the 2018 Peace Accords and decided by South Sudanese President Salva Kiir, created an outbreak of violence in Nasir town, from which a wave of arrests was unleashed.

In South Sudan, after several years of civil war, the warring political leaders signed a peace agreement in 2018 and in August 2022 signed to extend the transition period that was due to expire in February 2025 with elections scheduled for December this year, after several delays.
