Under the theme “Accelerating Action for Clean Air, Access to Clean Energy, and Climate Change Mitigation,” the World Health Organization (WHO)-sponsored conference seeks to promote global action against climate change and pollution, which impacts the health of billions.
The WHO stated that the event will showcase coordinated, evidence-based solutions for cities, countries, and regions to prevent communicable and non-communicable diseases, save lives, and protect children’s health.
UN figures indicate that air pollution causes at least seven million deaths annually, primarily from non-communicable diseases like cardiovascular and respiratory illnesses, and lung cancer.
The conference gathers ministers of health, environment, and energy, officials from national, intergovernmental, and development agencies, researchers, academics, and civil society representatives.
Colombian Deputy Minister of Public Health Jaime Urrego stated the conference offers an opportunity for officials to examine evidence of pollution’s health impacts, share solutions, and establish political commitment to curb pollution.
