World Meteorological Day: closing early warning gaps

Meteorologia-500x333
Geneva, Mar 23 (Prensa Latina) Today, as the world commemorates the Meteorological Day, experts are joining hands and striving to close the current gap in early warning systems, so as to reduce deaths and losses associated to dangerous weather phenomena.

This year’s commemoration coincides with the 75th anniversary of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO), considered the United Nations’ authoritative voice on weather, climate, and water.

In a message sent on these celebrations, WMO Secretary-General Celeste Saulo stressed that over the years, we have brought billions of dollars in added value to the global economy.

Additionally, we have saved billions of dollars in economic losses from weather, climate, and water-related hazards, and hundreds of thousands of lives.

She added that the unrestricted exchange of weather-related data, products, and services is critical to the security of countries and climate-sensitive sectors such as agriculture, aviation, shipping, energy, water management, and health.

Saulo called on governments globally to multiply investments in the National Meteorological and Hydrological Services, which he considered essential for domestic and global socioeconomic development.
