Panama, Costa Rica boost cooperation to tackle irregular migration

darien-migrantes
Panama City, Mar 23 (Prensa Latina) Panamanian and Costa Rican authorities are currently boosting several cooperation tools to deal with irregular migration to the United States and back from the North.

Panama’s Deputy Security Minister Luis Felipe Icaza and Costa Rica’s Security Minister Mario Zamora, who is visiting this country, made this remark during a meeting to assess progress made in controlling the both migrant flows.

Icaza and Zamora informed that the transit to the US of undocumented migrants through the Darien jungle, bordering Colombia, has so far decreased by 99 percent.

According to the sources, this is the result of measures such as the closing of illegal trails, the establishment of a single humanitarian corridor, increasing maritime patrols, and flights to deport illegal immigrants, as part of a memorandum signed with the United States in July 2024.

Zamora shared some of the actions implemented by the Costa Rican authorities to control security in the Limon port and requested an explanation of the procedures Panama is applying to ensure that migrants still here can have free mobility.

Expounding on the issue, Roger Mojica, director of Panama’s National Migration Service (SNM), explained that out of 299 migrants deported from the United States, 189 accepted voluntary return, three are in the process to buy airtickets, and 107 have been granted a temporary humanitarian permit.
