Ecuador’s runoff campaign officially opens

Quito, Mar 23 (Prensa Latina) Ecuador’s electoral campaign officially kicked off on Sunday with a view to the April 13 runoff between current President Daniel Noboa, who is running for reelection, and Luisa Gonzalez, from the Citizen Revolution Party (RC).

This time, the political campaign is not being preceded by large rallies or caravans, as in previous events, as both contenders will be facing each other on an TV debate that will be broadcast nationwide this Sunday evening.

Candidate Noboa comes wrapped in controversy, as he is required by his candidacy to request unpaid leave of absence and hand down the Government leadership to Vice President Veronica Abad.

However, this has not happened so far. Noboa, running for the National Democratic Action (AND) remains in office.

Government Minister Jose de la Gasca announced that the president will stick to the same strategy he used in the first round of the elections, when he stated that he is not obliged to take a leave of absence, because he does not consider this a reelection.

According to De la Gasca, Noboa took on the executive power to conclude Guillermo Lasso’s term, after the latter left the presidency having activated the cross-death mechanism in 2023.

The campaign will conclude on April 10. The National Electoral Council (CNE) allocated a 1.10-million-dollar budget divided between the two candidates, who in any case are still entitled to receive private donations.

On Sunday, April 13, more than 13.4 million Ecuadorians will choose between Noboa and Gonzalez, and their clearly antagonistic political agendas.
