Increased security in Brazilian Supreme Court for Bolsonaro trial

Brasilia, March 22 (Prensa Latina) The increased security at the Supreme Court on March 25 and 26, the scheduled dates for the trial of former president Jair Bolsonaro, stood out in Brazil during the week ending today.

With the support of the Military Police, the protection scheme centers around the building in this capital, and an initiative was also established to prevent cyberattacks.

Since the Supreme Federal Court (STF) set the dates for the analysis, it has received threats, with a significant increase in attacks. Some by phone, others by email.

The STF’s plan is also to restrict the number of people on court premises and impose changes to traffic on the Esplanade of the Ministries.

The Supreme Court scheduled the hearing of the complaint against Bolsonaro and seven other people for their involvement in an alleged coup plot for those days. This hearing will be held in the first chamber of the court in three sessions: two on the 25th and a third on the 26th.

For his ambitious goal of staying in power, but possibly losing his freedom, Bolsonaro was charged on February 18 by the Attorney General’s Office (Prosecutor’s Office) with attempted coup.

The Attorney General’s Office accused the right-wing opposition leader of leading a criminal organization to prevent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva from assuming power, after he defeated him in the 2022 elections.

Jurists explain that in Brazil, the law punishes attempted coups, even if the conspiracy fails.

The 272-page indictment, which also implicates 33 other people, now includes the crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the democratic rule of law, and coup d’état.

Also included are crimes of aggravated damage by violence and serious threat to the property of the Union, with considerable harm to the victim and damage to declared assets.

According to Attorney General Paulo Gonet, who filed the complaint with the Supreme Court, the then-president (2019-2022) knew of and agreed to the plot to kill Lula, Vice President Geraldo Alckmin, and Justice Alexandre de Moraes, by poisoning.

In the document sent to the Supreme Court, the Attorney General’s Office lists the acts that support the accusations in each of the crimes.

“The members of the criminal organization structured, within the Planalto Palace (headquarters of the Executive Branch), a plan of attack on the institutions, with a view to overthrowing the functioning of the branches and the democratic order, which received the sinister name of the Green and Yellow Dagger,” the indictment states.
