WTO chief to ask for support for Ethiopia’s accession

Addis Ababa, Mar 21 (Prensa Latina) World Trade Organization (WTO) Director-General Nicozi Awela announced on Friday that she will call African member states to support Ethiopia's bid to join the global international trade organization.

Fana Broadcasting Corporate informed that Awela backed Addis Ababa’s bid for WTO ascension during a meeting held in Geneva, Switzerland, with Ethiopia’s negotiating team led by Trade and Regional Integration Minister Kassahun Gofe.

“We had a fruitful discussion with the intergovernmental organization’s Director-General, Dr. Nicozi Awela, regarding the WTO accession negotiation process in our country [Ethiopia],” Gofe wrote on X.

The minister disclosed that his team briefed the WTO chief on the progress of bilateral and multilateral negotiations that the Ethiopian team has undertaken so far.

Looking ahead, the Ethiopian team raised the issues that need national and joint efforts.

In response, Awela stated that seeing Ethiopia as a member of WTO is her greatest initiative and assured the Ethiopian team that she would not hesitate to provide any support.
