On March 20, 1995, the sect released sarin gas on three subway lines during rush hour, killing 14 and injuring approximately 6,300. Relatives, survivors, and commuters laid flowers and prayed at a memorial stand.
Kasumigaseki station staff observed a minute of silence at 8:00 AM, the time of the attack. Thirteen members of the Aum Shinrikyo sect, including leader Asahara Shoko (Matsumoto Chizuo), were sentenced to death and executed in 2018 for the attack. Attendees at the commemoration emphasized the importance of educating younger generations about the incident to ensure it is not forgotten and lessons are learnt.
