Six dead and dozens missing in Mediterranean shipwreck

Tunis, Mar 20 (Prensa Latina) Survivors of an inflatable boat that left the Tunisian port of Sfax reported that it was shipwrecked in Mediterranean waters while trying to reach the Italian island of Lampedusa, it was learned here.

Meanwhile, the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) reported that the Italian Coast Guard recovered six bodies and was searching for some 40 missing migrants. Another 10 people, including four women, were rescued on Tuesday and taken to Lampedusa, Italy’s southernmost island.

According to eyewitnesses, the boat began to deflate a few hours after its departure and the passengers were from Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Guinea and Mali.

United Nations figures estimate that the number of dead and missing in the dangerous central Mediterranean exceeded 24,506 between 2014 and 2024.

The Port of Sfax is one of Tunisia’s main seaports, located on the eastern coast of the country. Located in the Mahdia region, about 270 kilometers south of the Tunisian capital.

This strategic geographical location allows Sfax to control maritime traffic between Europe and Africa.
