Jamaica and Portugal in exercise on tsunami warning

Kingston, Mar 20 (Prensa Latina) The Caribbean island of Jamaica and Portugal will be the scenarios of the Caribbean Wave, annual exercise of tsunami simulation and in which warnings of this phenomenon will be emitted, the organizers announced.

The Caribbean Wave aims to validate and promote tsunami preparedness efforts in the Caribbean and adjacent regions.

The practice consists of simulating two different scenarios, with each participating country selecting the site that best suits its objectives.

The first scenario simulates a tsunami generated by an 8,0 magnitude earthquake located in the Enriquillo-Plantain Garden fault zone.

The second scenario simulates a tsunami generated by a magnitude 8,5 earthquake located approximately 270 kilometers off the coast of Portugal.

The Caribbean Wave is the annual training of the Intergovernmental Coordination Group for the Tsunami and Other Coastal Hazards Warning System for the Caribbean and Adjacent Regions (ICG/CARIBE-EWS) of the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO.
