The new economic zone is expected to attract a significant volume of foreign investment and generate thousands of jobs, according to Press Secretary Yusuf Permana.
“The government aims to secure a total investment of Rp 75,8 trillion (US$4,6 billion) and create 58,145 new jobs in the Batang Special Economic Zone over the next five years,” Permana said.
The zone will focus on the manufacturing, logistics and distribution sectors.
During his visit, the president also reviewed progress at the Two Countries Twin Parks project, a collaboration with China’s Fujian province, which has invested Rp 16 trillion (US$971,36 billion).
Since its establishment last year, the Batang industrial area has already generated more than 7,000 jobs for local residents.
Several multinational companies began operating in the area, including KCC Glass from South Korea, Yihquan Footwear from Taiwan and SEG Solar from the United States.
In addition, an international port is currently under construction in the area and should be operational next year.
