German FM visits Syria, reopens embassy in Damascus

Damascus, Mar 20 (Prensa Latina) German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock began today an official visit to Syria, considered the second since the fall of the government of Bashar Al-Assad early in December last year.

Details of the program of the visit were not announced for security reasons, reported sources quoted by the media here.

Baerbock is scheduled to meet with interim President Ahmed Al-Shara and civil society representatives, as well as reopen his country’s embassy in Damascus, which had been closed for 12 years.

The chancellor was accompanied by Armin Laschet, a member of parliament from the Christian Democratic Party.

Speaking to the press after her arrival, Baerbock considered that foreign interventions in Syria have only led to chaos and that the future of the country should be decided by the Syrians themselves, without any foreign interference.

She urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint and not to undermine internal reconciliation efforts, and stressed that national reconciliation is now essential to transform Syrians’ aspirations into reality.

The transitional government headed by Ahmed Al-Shara will face difficult challenges, the senior German official said.

She praised the agreement reached with the Kurds in northeastern Syria, and asserted that this demonstrates the possibility of achieving a unified Syria.
