Film Fresa y Chocolate closes Cuban movie show in Bolivia

La Paz, Mar 19 (Prensa Latina) Cuban film "Fresa y Chocolate" (Strawberry and Chocolate, 1993) closes on Wednesday, at the Fernando Montes Museum in Bolivia, a show of movies dedicated by the Sopocachi Cineclub in La Paz to Cuban filmmaker Tomas Gutierrez Alea (Titon).

“His critical and humanist vision made it a milestone in Cuban cinema and the country’s first film to be nominated for an Oscar award. More than a political story, it is a celebration of respect and diversity,” the organizers wrote.

A statement delivered to Prensa Latina affirms that the four films predicted until Wednesday mark the beginning of the 2025 season “with a first series of films directed by Titon.”

The comedy film “La Muerte de un Burocrata” (Death of A Bureaucrat, 1966) opened on February 5 screenings and debates at the new Cineclub headquarters in the Fernando Montes Museum in the downtown Sopocachi neighborhood in La Paz.

The members of this project met again on February 19 to show the film “Memorias del Subdesarrollo” (Memories of Underdevelopment, 1968) in the auditorium equipped by the team of the Center of Cultural Revolution, attached to the Cultural Foundation of the Central Bank of Bolivia.

“La Ultima Cena” (The Last Supper, 1976) was screened on March 5, and the 1994 Oscar nominee for Best Foreign Language Film “Fresa y Chocolate” will close the series of films this Wednesday.

Co-directed by Gutierrez Alea and film director Juan Carlos Tabio, this Cuban-Spanish-Mexican drama film is one of the first examples of LGTBIQ+ themes in Ibero-American cinema.

The movie is based on the short story “El Lobo, El Bosque, y El Hombre Nuevo” (The Wolf, the Forest, and the New Man), by author and screenwriter Senel Paz.

Considered one of the most outstanding filmmakers in Cuban cinema’s history, Gutierrez Alea (1928-1996) wrote screenplays and directed more than twenty internationally influential shorts, feature films, and documentaries.
