DRC presidential spokesperson Tina Salama told a local radio station that the two heads of State met on Tuesday at the initiative of Emir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani to find solutions to the conflict.

Salama stated, “The most important thing for us is to reach an immediate ceasefire and the heads of State reaffirmed the commitment of all parties to an immediate and unconditional ceasefire.”

The spokesperson added that discussions in Doha will continue to reinforce the Nairobi and Luanda processes and build solid foundations for achieving peace.

Presidents Tshisekedi and Kagame met for the first time after the escalation of violence in eastern DRC, which led to the seizure of major cities such as Goma, in North Kivu, and Bukavu, in South Kivu, by the March 23 Movement (M23) rebels with Rwandan support.

Presidentes de RDC y Ruanda acuerdan en Qatar cese al fuego

Kinshasa, 19 mar (Prensa Latina) Los presidentes de República Democrática del Congo (RDC), Félix Tshisekedi, y de Ruanda, Paul Kagame, dialogaron en Doha, Qatar, y acordaron un cese al fuego en el este congoleño, informaron hoy medios de prensa locales.

La portavoz del mandatario congoleño, Tina Salama, explicó a Radio Okapi que ambos jefes de Estado se reunieron la víspera por la iniciativa del emir de Qatar, el jeque Tamim Bin Hamad Al Thani, con el propósito de encontrar soluciones al conflicto.

“Lo más importante para nosotros es alcanzar un cese al fuego inmediato y los jefes de Estado reafirmaron el compromiso de todas las partes con un alto al fuego inmediato e incondicional”, sostuvo Salama.

Añadió que las discusiones entabladas en Doha continuarán para reforzar los procesos de Nairobi y Luanday establecer bases sólidas para la paz.

Los presidentes Tshisekedi y Kagame se encontraron por primera vez luego de la escalada de la violencia en el este de la RDC, que condujo a la toma de ciudades importantes como Goma, en Kivu Norte, y Bukavu, en Kivu Sur, por los rebeldes del Movimiento 23 de Marzo (M23) con apoyo de Ruanda.
