On Tuesday, the anniversary of the first case detected in the country in 2020, the expert agreed with the World Health Organization (WHO) that there is a “collective amnesia” about the existence of the danger.
“All that is needed is for it to undergo some specific mutations and we would be back in the same situation. Therefore, we should not let our guard down in terms of vigilance,” the physician pointed out.
He warned that people should not neglect the prevention mechanisms against Covid-19, such as hand washing, the use of masks and not to go to crowded places.
He added that the risk of a pandemic not only lies in Covid-19, but also in other diseases that can get out of control, such as Ebola, monkeypox, bird flu, and other diseases such as measles.
The Panamanian said that it is worth commemorating these dates in honor of the millions of people in the world who died from this virus, a figure that the WHO counted at approximately seven million in 2031 in the world.
He also estimated that “we are not prepared for a new pandemic, the world is not”, and stated that we should bet on science and research to make plans that would be executed in case of an emergency.
