Argentine University Front continues strike

Buenos Aires, Mar 18 (Prensa Latina) The Argentine National University Trade Union Front (FSUN) continues its 48-hour strike, to denounce the sector's underfunding and demanding salary increases.

In a statement, the FSUN highlighted the high turnout and reiterated that if the government’s lack of response and refusal to sit down to discuss the serious situation persist, the measures will continue to grow.

Recently, the Front also stated that its members will participate in a march on Wednesday in defense of retirees. The organization explained that the strike is taking place in response to the policies implemented by Javier Milei’s administration and was called as part of a plan to combat the loss of workers’ purchasing power and the structural underfunding of universities, events that have a devastating impact on the sector.

The Front also denounced that only a 1.5 percent salary increase was approved in January and a 1.2 percent increase in February, which is considered insufficient. “The government not only intensifies the salary crisis for teachers and non-teachers, but also ignores the negotiation process as a forum for discussion where differences are resolved, conflicts are channeled, and agreements regarding salaries and working conditions are reached,” the statement stated.

Underfunding is a serious problem facing the educational community and society in general. Without a budget law for 2025, institutions face another year without a clear future, affecting substantive aspects such as the development of academic projects, research, and the sustainability of the student scholarship system. Overall, the Front added, basic operations are jeopardized.

The organization also expressed its concern and outrage over the harsh repression around Congress last week, carried out by security forces against protesters who demanded respect for the elderly .

“The policy this government is pursuing is not only a savage clampdown on workers and the poor, but one that nullifies all conditions of the rule of law. To achieve this, it is applying savage repression,” said Marcelo Creta of the Confederation of Education Workers.
