Haiti needs food aid, says FAO

Port-au-Prince, Mar 17 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), reported that Haiti is today on the list of 45 countries in need of food aid from abroad.

In Haiti, it is estimated that 5.5 million people, or almost half of its population of 11.5 million, will face acute food insecurity between March and June 2025, that is to say, phase four.

The statement adds that a smaller percent will suffer phase five, that is, famine, which will be marked by total lack of access to food, widespread death and displacement.

The situation in this Caribbean country, FAO points out in the statement released to the Haiti Libre newspaper, is the result of a persistent economic recession for six years, low domestic food production, high prices, fuel shortages and major natural hazards.
