We must approach energy development in a thoughtful, comprehensive manner, taking into consideration future opportunities, because it is not only about how to meet the current energy needs of the country, that is why I decided to create the Nuclear Energy Agency, Tokayev said.
The head of state also called for “making full use of gas and coal-fired generation capacities, as well as the potential of renewable energy sources.”
Tokayev stressed the importance of creating a new energy industry that will provide the basis for the dynamic economic development of the republic in the coming decades.
In this context, it is necessary to build not just one, but three nuclear power plants, the head of state added.
On October 6, 2024, Kazakh citizens approved in a national referendum the construction of the country’s first nuclear power plant, an option supported by 71 percent of voters.
Kazakhstan is currently considering high-power reactor technologies from four suppliers – China, South Korea, France and Russia.
