The employees are still in a state of shock, because it is not only Radio Television Caribe, but the whole station that constitutes a heritage with a symbolic dimension, the newspaper Le Nouvelliste stressed.
The criminal attack represents another affront against the media, an additional threat, and proves that the gangs are not going to stop their offensive in the capital neither in its surroundings.
“I always believed that they were not going to attack these facilities, because this media is a symbol,” journalist Michel Joseph said.
Founded in 1949, Radio Television Caribe is of the most followed media by Haitians.
Rue Chavannes, where it was located, is a meeting place for presenters, radio journalists and the public.
A year ago, its management left the rue Chavannes building to take refuge in Pétion-Ville.
This decision, Le Nouvelliste recalls, was taken at a time when gangs were expanding their control and managed to occupy several neighborhoods surrounding the station’s premises.
The National Media Association of Haiti says it is stunned by the news of the fire and described as infamous this misdeed, which reaffirms the continuity of the chaos generated by the bandits.
“These are memories that we are losing. It is our humanity that we are losing. It is our history that we are losing,” concluded the newspaper, which, last year, had also suffered a gang attack.
