China ready to work with Canada on the basis of mutual respect

Beijing, Mar 10 (Prensa Latina) China today congratulated Canada's new Prime Minister Mark Carney and expressed readiness to work together on the basis of mutual respect, equality and shared benefit. Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning urged Ottawa to “maintain an objective and rational perception towards China, adopt a practical and positive policy, and move in the same direction as us to promote the development and improvement of bilateral relations.”

Mark Carney, an economist and former governor of the Bank of Canada, was elected leader of the ruling Liberal Party with 85.9 percent of the vote.

Relations between China and Canada are going through a tense moment marked by trade disagreements, compounded by a tariff war between the two countries and the United States.

Beijing recently announced the imposition of additional duties on certain products imported from Canada, in response to measures previously adopted by Ottawa affecting Chinese goods.

The Canadian government imposed, as of October 2024, a 100 percent tariff on electric vehicles imported from China and a 25 percent levy on steel and aluminum products.

These actions were described by Beijing as a serious violation of World Trade Organization (WTO) rules, while China considered them protectionist and discriminatory against national interests.
