“The Environmental Agency, an organization of CITMA that leads the management and conservation of biodiversity and natural resources in Cuba, is celebrating its 30th anniversary. Science, projects, networks, alliances and above all, almost five thousand workers passionate about Nature. Congratulations,” wrote the president on his official account on X.
The Environmental Agency in Cuba, belonging to the Ministry of Science, Technology and Environment of the Caribbean nation (Citma), emerged on March 6, 1995 with the objective of being a leading organization in the search for environmental solutions, integrated, cohesive, with a high capacity to convene in function of development.
Comprised of 24 research centers, and others dedicated to scientific and technological services in the Cuban provinces, among its main actions is the promotion of programs, projects and services, which in recent years amounted to 886 state and 1,324 technical-commercial, in addition to adding this 2025 one destined to the Heritage and Natural Resources Sector, points out a report from the Cuban News Agency.
AMA’s first project, which lasted 20 years, was the Sabana-Camagüey Ecosystem, with national financing and from the Global Environment Facility, in order to sustain the conservation of biodiversity in three productive sectors of the Ecosystem due to their considerable physical, biological, economic and social interactions, of local and global interest.
AMA has organized, directed and implemented Hazard, Vulnerability and Disaster Risk Studies, and Environmental Impact Assessments since 2006. These analyses have allowed for permanent modeling of sea level rise for the years 2050-2100.
During 2021, the agency described the impacts and negative consequences of the forest fire in areas of the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park (Guantánamo-Holguín), tropical storm Elsa and hurricane Ida, in the central and western regions, respectively.
