Some 61,000 refugees have entered Burundi, according to the release attributed to UN Secretary-General Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, who also alluded to internally displaced persons (IDPs).
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has requested the receiving States to register all asylum seekers from the DRC and provide them with documents.
According to Actualite.cd, in response to the crisis, the Burundian Interior Minister granted refugee status to those seeking protection in that country, thus allowing for a rapid humanitarian response.
As for the internally displaced people, in Goma alone, the capital of North Kivu province, an estimated 17,000 people remain in displacement sites, schools, and churches, while 414,000 others have been on the move for the last four weeks, encouraged by the March 23 Movement (M23)’s authorities, which occupy the city.
